Rene descartes discourse6/29/2023 Thus, Descartes gives utterance to the intelligent mind of his time. Thus, the author sees no use in studying volumes of literature and he resorts to the study of his own self and his reason. Instead of giving him answers to the questions, studying provided the philosopher with doubts, errors, and controversies that begot his feeling of utter ignorance. Descartes gives an account of his impression of the studies at “one of the most celebrated schools in Europe” (Descartes 5) as absolutely unsatisfying. It is up to a reader to accept it or to reject it as unconvincing. The philosopher finds this explanation sufficient for the presentation of his own method, though he has no intention to impose it on a reader, he just wants to give a personal description of the paths he has followed in his pursuit of the truth (Descartes 4). The first part of Discourse on the Method opens with a statement that a reader can find rather optimistic, the author states that all people are rational pari passu, and the application of different ways and methods of applying reason is the main cause of different understanding of the truth.

Things you save in a fire book review6/29/2023 Not to mention, she works at a new firehouse with all male coworkers who aren’t too happy to have a woman in their midst - except for one fireman who is new, too. While living in a new town under the same roof as her mom, Cassie is forced to deal with the emotional baggage she’s been lugging around since her mother left her and her father more than a decade earlier. In this novel, main character Cassie Hanwell is a firefighter living in Texas who moves to Boston to help out her ailing, estranged mother. I guess that’s why her novels are considered “comfort reads.” Center’s writing is so easy and enjoyable to me. I’ve been on a Katherine Center kick lately with this being the third book I’ve read by her in the last two and a half months.

Jim bouton mickey mantle6/29/2023 Ball Four begins “I signed my contract today to play for the Seattle Pilots at a salary of $22,000 and it was a letdown because I didn’t have to bargain. One player hitching up his pants, saying, “I add 20 points to my average if I know how bitchin’ I look out there.”Ībove all, here was a proud man wrestling with failure. Players shouting “Ding-dong!” when a catcher took a foul ball to his protective cup. Pound that ol’ Budweiser into you and go get ‘em tomorrow.”Īnd here was a fresh side to the grand old game - fun. Here were veteran managers saying the stupidest things - “Attaway to stomp ‘em. Here were “heroic” New York Yankees prowling a hotel roof to “shoot beaver” by peeping into windows. Keep going!’” In 2001, Jim Bouton came out with the last version of his classic Ball. Jim Bouton, the irreverent Yankee who died at 80 Wednesday after a long battle with cerebral amyloid angiopathy, was a man of many layers. Joan of arc a life transfigured6/28/2023 But 600 years after she was born, the story of the Maid of Orleans has been repeatedly built up and torn down by every perspective imaginable and used to attack or defend any position of thought. Deftly weaving historical fact, myth, folklore, artistic representations, and centuries of scholarly and critical interpretation into a compelling narrative, she restores Joan of Arc to her rightful position as one of the greatest heroines in all of human history.Ī straightforward biography of the life and times of Joan of Arc would be interesting enough for me. Was she a divinely inspired saint? A schizophrenic? A demonically possessed heretic, as her persecutors and captors tried to prove?Įvery era must retell and reimagine the Maid of Orleans' extraordinary story in its own way, and in Joan of Arc: A Life Transfigured, the superb novelist and memoirist Kathryn Harrison gives us a Joan for our time - a shining exemplar of unshakable faith, extraordinary courage, and self-confidence during a brutally rigged ecclesiastical inquisition and in the face of her death by burning. The profoundly inspiring and fully documented saga of Joan of Arc, the young peasant girl whose "voices" moved her to rally the French nation and a reluctant king against British invaders in 1428, has fascinated artistic figures as diverse as William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Voltaire, George Bernard Shaw, Bertolt Brecht, Carl Dreyer, and Robert Bresson. |
